The South Florida Beer Blog, a really great beverage blog

This week’s blogger in the spotlight is Dave Crisafi author of the South Florida Beer Blog. I met Dave last April via email when I put together my website, All About Entertaining which has morphed into South Florida Food and Wine. Dave was one of the original bloggers to agree to link to me when I was no one. No voice,  no audience, no followers. But being the great guy that Dave is he agreed and my very first blog visitor came from the link on the South Florida Beer Blog. I have not forgotten this; how I got started and who helped me. Consequently, when beverage postings simply must be about “the brew” I won’t even attempt one sentence, well maybe something in the vein of self-deprecating humor but will always defer to the beer expert; the one who believed in some food and wine girls’ postings when they weren’t even that. So on one of the most honorable days to drink beer, Super Bowl Sunday, I present to my following a really great beverage blogger, Dave Crisafi author of the South Florida Beer Blog.

SFFW: How did you start beer blogging?
SFBB: I had joined Twitter in April of last year and would always tweet when I was somewhere that had good beer. My wife made the suggestion that I should start a blog so that more people than my 10 friends on Twitter would know about these places. So I owe it all to my wife.

SFFW: Do you do anything else other than blog about beer?
SFBB: At the moment I am working part time assisting a wedding photographer and I also just recently went back to school. I was laid off from my fulltime job about a year ago and have just been trying to figure out in what direction I want to go. I would love to get a job in the beer industry in the long run.

SFFW: What is the most challenging thing about blogging?
SFBB: Haha it is a lot harder than most people think. The amount of time it takes to do each post for the type of blog I have takes some time. Between having the experience with the beer to write about, taking pictures or finding images to go with the post and then writing the post, I spend a lot of late nights working on the posts. It is tough to balance finding time to write for the blog and have a real life. At the moment the balancing act is working out.

SFFW: What is the greatest opportunity that has come from blogging for you?
SFBB: I’ve been sent some free beer and been given some free beers at bars so that is always nice. But probably the greatest opportunity is that it has given me a way to get my foot in the door to the beer industry. I love beer and would love to work in the beer industry so hopefully this will help get me there.

SFFW: What is your most memorable blogging moment?
SFBB: Well…I would say one of the most memorable moments was when I first added Google Analytics to the blog and was seeing that more than my friends were reading the blog. That was pretty cool. Also whenever I go to a beer event and I give out cards for the blog and people tell me they are at the event because of the blog talking about it that is a pretty good feeling.

SFFW: It’s your last day on earth, what would your final meal be?
SFBB: Wow…ummmm….this is such a tough question. Food is my second favorite thing to beer so this is hard. I love a good burger so possibly that. But I also love a New England clam bake too. So maybe some sort of combination of both. Ask me tomorrow and I may remember something else I love to add to it.

SFFW: What super-action-figure-hero would you like to be and why?
SFBB: I’m not sure which one in particular but I know I would like to be able to fly. There are lots of places I would like to visit more often and I think not having to pay for a flight would be very useful.

SFFW: Do you have any wacky drinking habits?
SFBB: Well I don’t find them wacky but I tend to take longer than some to finish a beer. I like beer with lots of taste so even when it warms up a little it is still very drinkable so I don’t need to chug it before it tastes like crap warm.

SFFW: What is the best beer advice you have to share?
SFBB: Don’t turn down a beer just because you don’t like “dark beer”. The color of the beer doesn’t necessarily let you know what the beer will taste like. When I do private beer tastings I usually bring the beer St. Bernardus 12 which is dark but has a very different sweet taste then what people think of dark beers having. Give new beers a chance. You can always go back to what you know you like if you don’t like it.

SFFW: What is your one obsessive drinking habit?
SFBB: I have a problem sticking to one beer. I always like to try and search out new different beers.

SFFW: If looked in your refrigerator, what would I find?
SFBB: Beer, water, beer, Diet Coke, beer, milk, beer, eggs, beer, leftovers and possibly some more beer.

SFFW: What is the one “staple” food you always have in your cupboard?
SFBB: Pasta and popcorn

SFFW: What is your beverage of choice? (I had to ask!)
SFBB: Well, besides the obvious my favorite other alcoholic drink is a gin and tonic. Non-alcoholic, Diet Coke.

SFFW: What is your favorite comfort food?
SFBB: Bacon cheese burger

SFFW: What is your beer claim to fame?
SFBB: I have been lucky enough to have a few but the bottle of the world’s strongest beer at 32% (that is until the brewery broke their own record last month) that there are only 250 bottles of is pretty cool.

SFFW: What is in your kitchen junk drawer?
SFBB: Lots of menus, some manuals and bunch of other useless crap that we some reason keep around.

SFFW: What is the best beer gift you ever received?
SFBB: That would have been the world’s strongest beer. Got it for a wedding present from my best friend.

SFFW: What kitchen chore do you dislike the most?
SFBB: Mopping. I just refuse to do it. I’ll do the dishes, clean the bathroom and take out the garbage all day but I hate mopping.

SFFW: What is the most exotic food you have ever eaten and where?
SFBB: I had kangaroo when I was in Australia.

SFFW: What is the most bizarre thing you ever did with food?
SFBB: I will plead the fifth on this one.
