In the News: food, drink and the South Florida lifestyle

With Spring Break in full swing and Easter Sunday around the corner, planning for this weekend’s activities are most prevalent. In addition to our list of where to go for Easter Brunch in South Florida , and our Happy Hour lists from Palm Beach to Coral Gables we’ve got a few events happening over the next few weeks worth a pencil in on calendars. Beginning April 11 da Campo at the Il Lugano Hotel Fort Lauderdale will be hosting mozzarella-making classes to the public, where Executive Chef Joseph Quinn will teach guests how to make da Campo’s signature fresh-pulled mozzarella. This new Chef’s Night series will be held from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at da Campo Osteria on the third Wednesday of every month. Class will include hors d’oeuvres, a mozzarella demonstration, and the chef’s selection of entrée and dessert. Participants will receive recipe cards and a bottle of olive oil to take home as well as paired wine to sip during the lesson. In order to assure Chef Quinn’s full attention, class size will be limited to ten participants. Florida Heart Research Institute  hosts two culinary fundraisers in April, Driven to Dine and Heart of a Chef. Driven to Dine is a luxurious dining experience that will take place on Saturday, April 14, 2012.  Starting with an exclusive cocktail reception and a live auction. After the reception, guests will be whisked off in a limousine to  a dining destination unknown for an evening of culinary surprise. The participating restaurants are: 1500˚ at Eden Roc Renaissance Miami Beach, CRAVE, db Bistro Moderne, Edge, Steak & Bar at the Four Seasons Miami,Flemings Prime Steakhouse, La Cofradia, RED The Steakhouse, Tudor House, Truluck’s and J&G Grill at the St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort. Tickets for Driven to Dine cost $5,000 per limo, which seats 8 guests; or $625 per person. Click here for more information and to purchase tickets.

Heart of a Chef is a family-friendly food festival focused on the prevention of childhood obesity, which has been known to lead to heart disease. Sunday, April 29 this interactive event will offer activities for attendees of all ages including food and wine tastings and educational seminars, all designed to heighten awareness and give children and their parents information to make health-conscious decisions while adopting a heart healthy lifestyle. Heart of a Chef’s annual culinary battle.  This year’s chef cook-off will feature two local chefs – Joshua Wahler, executive chef at CRAVE Restaurant and Giorgio Rapicavoli of Eating House. A basket of mystery ingredients will be given to the chefs, challenging them to create a meal which is both delicious and heart healthy. Tickets for HOAC are $30 per person; the purchase of one adult ticket includes admission for two children. Click here for more information and to purchase tickets.

For the third consecutive year, a group of Miami food bloggers will bake their best treats to raise funds for Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale – a national campaign that mobilizes Americans to end childhood hunger by organizing bake sales in their communities. The 2012 Miami Food Bloggers Bake Sale will take place on Saturday, April 28th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South Miami Farmers Market, located in front of South Miami City Hall, 6130 Sunset Dr., South Miami. The 2012 Miami Food Bloggers Bake Sale is part of the National Food Bloggers Bake Sale, a coordinated effort between food bloggers all over the United States, who are holding bake sales simultaneously on April 28th.  All proceeds from sales of baked goods and raffle tickets support Share Our Strength’s “No Kid Hungry” movement by helping fund after school and summer feeding programs.
