SOMM is a documentary film about four men preparing to take and [pass] the most difficult test you’ve probably never heard of, The Master Sommelier Exam administered by the prestigious Court of Master Sommeliers. The Court of Master Sommeliers is one of the world’s most secretive, and exclusive organizations. Since its inception almost 40 years ago, less than 200 candidates have reached the Master level. The exam covers every nuance of the world of wine, spirits and cigars. SOMM takes the viewer on a humorous, emotional and insightful look into a mysterious world of the Court of Master Sommeliers and its massively intimidating Master Sommelier Exam.
I watched SOMM earlier this week and enjoyed it to the nth degree; so much so I’m in the process of incorporating the film into my Wine Appreciation curriculum. This introspective documentary sheds light on much of what is unknown and misunderstood with regards to wine experts and what they do. If the world of wine is your passion, obsession or infatuation then this film is a must see. Your emotions will run the gamut, if you have taken any wine exam with any organization SOMM will resonate with you on every level. For the average person not professionally tapped into the minutia of the world of wine you may be lost during some parts of the movie but you will walk away with a whole new level of understanding of wine, the world in which it is, and those who make it so.
Locally in South Florida there are daily showings of SOMM at O Cinema Wynwood, 90 NW 29th Street Miami, (305) 571-9970 and a one time showing at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale on August 22 from 6:30PM – 9:30PM; the movie is coupled with a food and wine pairing event the cost is $50, 954-262-0249.
