South Florida Weekend Getaway to Hutchinson Island and Singer Island

No matter your definition of R&R, regularly scheduled weekend getaways are just enough to rejuvenate the mind, body, and spirit. So if it’s endless hours on the golf course, at the spa or just sitting on the beach with a good book, 72 hours of being unplugged from your daily life can renew, restore and revitalize. So far this summer I’ve been on four weekend getaways, each taking me a step further towards defining my personal R&R, each one being different than the previous.

This past weekend Florida Marriott hosted a press trip of eight bloggers/writers including myself; each of us were geographically positioned throughout the state, visiting multiple resorts. The two resorts I visited were Hutchinson Island Marriott Beach Resort & Marina and the Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island Beach Resort & Spa.

My three night stay and home base was at the Hutchinson Island Marriott Beach Resort & Marina with a day trip down to the Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island Beach Resort & Spa for lunch at 3800 Ocean and a spa treatment at SiSpa.

Marriott Palm Beach Singer Island Resort & Spa

Both resorts are family friendly offering amenities and activities to keep everyone happy and occupied no matter the age. At the Marriott Singer Island the guest suites are efficiency-style with kitchens, separate laundry room areas and ample living room space ideal for families and groups traveling together. There is a separate kids pool as well as a kids club but if family activities are preferable, there are games, movies and activities available. Some services and activities are complimentary and others charge a nominal fee.  There are five food and beverage outlets within the resort making it amenable to never having to leave. The restaurants range from cafes and grills to upscale dining at 3800 Ocean.

SiSpa at Marriott Palm Beach Singer Island Resort & Spa

SiSpa offers services for everyone, men, women, and children for that much desired pampering and glamouring. Upon check-in the resort will give you their pamphlet of monthly activities broken down by the day and the hour; you have the option of keeping yourself and your family busy every minute of the day or not; beach chair rentals complete with umbrellas and tables are available for those who need to simply walk away from it all.

Hutchinson Island Marriott Beach Resort & Marina is similar to it’s Singer Island sibling in that it is a family friendly property. This particular resort does not have a spa but offers more in the way of outdoor physical activities such as golf and tennis.

Hutchinson Island Marriott Beach Resort & Marina

The resort is two separate properties, the oceanfront Sandpiper Tower and the Main Hotel. The main hotel is home to Baha Grille the resort’s full service restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily and Latitudes the poolside Tiki Bar serving a bar-style menu. The Sandpiper Tiki Bar is housed at the Sandpiper Tower adjacent to the beach and pool area.

The genuine hospitality at both properties struck me like a thunderbolt. Team members at each resort that I interacted with like their jobs, a lot, and do them very well. This is a very obvious fact, one that can hardly be overlooked or missed. I’m a bit jaded, and very observant, having been entrenched in South Florida for 23 years, not all is blue skies and sunshine all the time, and yet, just shy of a 100 miles up the coast you encounter a completely different semblance of style. It’s not easy working in the hospitality industry and yet, pretty much every person I met and chatted with could not have been more hospitable and real. Staff and team members went out of their way to fill each and every request and then began to anticipate the longer they got to know you. Case in point, batteries in smartphones just don’t last as long as we would like them to, especially if picture taking and uploading them to social media sites is involved; everywhere I go I need to seek out an electrical outlet to get re-charged, servers and team members at both resorts could not have been more accommodating in locating an FPL (Florida Power & Light) hookup for me. Sounds like a small request or even a small task but you’d be surprised at how many servers and attendants answer with a quick “nope” and walk away. It’s the little things, and the details tended to that make the biggest impressions.

Nikki’s famous Cappuccino & Cappuccino Muffins at Baha Grille

Because the Hutchinson Island Marriott was my primary venue I ate most of my meals at Baha Grille and got to know the servers and bartenders very well. I enjoyed all of my meals and cocktails but breakfast was my favorite, just give me a simple cappuccino, a muffin and a bowl of fruit and I’m good to go. Nikki who works the breakfast and lunch shifts hooked me up every morning; that woman can make a fine “cuppa capp”, I think I must have had six of them during my stay. I walked into the Baha Grille every morning and asked for Nikki. She’s truly a professional, and one of many employees who have been at this property for years, the turnover rate at this resort is nearly non-existent. I watched this woman manage her duties effortless and seamlessly day after day. I was kidding around with Jennifer who was my host for the weekend wondering what was in the Kool-Aid they all seem to be drinking. And yet, it’s just the way it is, they are in the hospitality business, they take their jobs very seriously, they are very good at what they do and are a tight-knit family of team members who understand the one basic principle, that if their employer is successful then they are successful. It was such a pleasant stay and I look forward to visiting again, just like so many of the guests I met and chatted with, who return year after year.

Currently both properties are running an Endless Summer promotion. This promotion is available for stays through October 31, 2013 that are booked by Sept. 25, the Endless Summer package includes a room upgrade and up to $100 resort credit. If you book your stay online use the promo code ZX0 at checkout; if you call to make reservations mention Endless Summer promotion by name to the operator.
