Robert Mondavi Winery has commissioned San Francisco artist Agelio Batle to create a limited-edition work of art inspired by the vines of the renowned To Kalon Vineyard. The object, called To Kalon Vine in Graphite, celebrates the provenance of one of Napa Valley’s greatest vineyards and the release of the winery’s first-ever To Kalon Vineyard-appellated Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. A limited number of To Kalon Vine in Graphite are now available for sale to the public. Inspired by Nature and informed by his formal studies in art and science, Batle is recognized for sculpting small objects from the natural world using a proprietary graphite compound. In creating the To Kalon Vine in Graphite object, he visited the venerated To Kalon Vineyard site for inspiration. Using discarded vines found in the vineyard, he incinerated them and added the vine ash to the graphite mix. The result is a finely sculpted decorative object and writing implement with a little bit of To Kalon inside it. The vine art uniquely captures the life forces that have shaped it, and looking closely in the swirling layers, one can glimpse abstract landscapes, clouds and the words ‘To Kalon’ subtly carved into its bark. The To Kalon Vine in Graphite fits comfortably in the hand and is approximately 5 1/8 inches long, by 1 inch in diameter.
Agelio Batle’s To Kalon Vine in Graphite is on sale now for $38 at the Robert Mondavi Winery and online at www.robertmondaviwinery.com and at www.asbworkshop.com. Fewer than 200 of the To Kalon Vine in Graphite items are available for purchase. Paired with a bottle of the award-winning Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve or Fume Blanc Reserve, both sourced from the To Kalon Vineyard, it makes an ideal gift for wine lovers or for anyone who is inspired by nature and its bounty.
When Robert Mondavi chose the To Kalon Vineyard as the home for his new winery, in 1966, he remarked “It was a vineyard with a distinguished history and a magical nature. Ideal soils, sunlight, and rain—to my eye, the vineyard was a treasure.” Those sentiments were re-confirmed when the To Kalon Vineyard was named the Vineyard of the Year by the California State Farm Bureau in 2011. The To Kalon Vineyard lies on prime benchland in west Oakville. The low fertility, well-drained soils and optimal sun exposure yield rich, complex flavors and impeccable fruit maturity.
Robert Mondavi Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2011; for wine enthusiasts who simply love to know the details; the grapes were hand-harvested into small bins and carefully sorted in our gravity-flow cellar. The clusters were gently destemmed directly into traditional French oak tanks for cold soak, fermentation and extended maceration – a total of 38 days of wine to skin contact – maximizing the extraction of varietal character and complexity while keeping the tannins fleshy and supple. The new wine was drained and gently pressed into 92% new French-oak barrels for malolactic fermentation, assuring seamless integration of fruit and oak. The final blend of 80 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 10 % Cabernet Franc, 6 % Petit Verdot, 2 % Merlot, 2 % Malbec was assembled through repeated tasting trials over the 20 months of barrel aging. The wine was bottled in September of 2013.
Robert Mondavi Winery is located at 7801 St. Helena Highway in Oakville, Napa Valley.
