Spottswoode Estate Wines

Spottswoode is a family-owned historic vineyard and winery renowned for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Established in 1882 by George Schonewald, the estate is distinguished by the pre-prohibition Victorian home depicted on the wine label. Spottswoode was christened by Mrs. Albert Spotts in 1910 and it was acquired by Mary and Jack Novak in 1972. Mary released Spottswoode’s first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1982, exactly one hundred years after the estate’s founding.

Situated on the western edge of St. Helena at the foot of the Mayacamas mountains, the Spottswoode terroir is ideal for growing fine wine grapes. Forty acres are planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, with small blocks of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc. Spottswoode has organically farmed their grapes since 1985, and the vineyard was certified organic in 1992. The roles of winemaking and vineyard management are very integrated at Spottswoode, and the individual attention given to each vineyard block contributes to the consistent quality and unique characteristics of Spottswoode wines.

2012 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. The year 2012 was what might be considered an idyllic growing season in Napa Valley, and Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautiful reflection of this vintage. Great structure and concentration, with ripe, refined tannins and good acidity. $165

2014 Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc. Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc is quintessentially Californian, with a ripeness balanced with wonderful structure and acidity. Grapes from select vineyards are blended with Spottswoode Estate fruit to make up the composition of this wine. A combination of small, stainless barrels, French oak, and concrete, egg-shaped cuves are utilized in fermentation. This technique results in a complex, rich, and vibrant wine. $38

2012 Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon. Another product of the picture-perfect 2012 growing season, this is quite simply an incredible Cabernet Sauvignon, offering a stylistic counterpoint to the Spottswoode Cabernet. A beautifully balanced wine with rich, red fruit characteristics and velvety tannins. approachable and expressive; a limited-production wine. $75
