This past weekend at SunFest in downtown West Palm Beach, I was invited to take part in a cocktail competition, where, in a friendly throwdown, myself and five of my media colleagues took to the bar where we were presented with a mystery box of ingredients and mixers along with three types of Captain Morgan flavored rums to create a Captain Morgan SunFest Cocktail.

The competitors were divided into two teams. On one team was myself, Alidia Fernandez of Nuestro Magazine and Katie McBroom of Martinis and Mascara,

and the other team was comprised of Kara Franker from Kara on the Coast, Alejandro Camacho of Nuestro Magazine, and Leslie Gray Streeter of the Palm Beach Post.

Kara, Alejandro, and Leslie created One Love in honor of SOJA one of the bands preforming at SunFest. Keeping it sweet and simple the One Love team mixed Captain Morgan coconut rum, orange juice, and pineapple juice for their first place winning cocktail.

Myself and my teammates created The Captain’s Sweet & Spicy. Our cocktail was a bit involved to make, but a gamble we decided to take because with great effort comes great rewards. I have an insatiable affinity for jalapeno peppers, anyone who subscribes to my juicing recipes or follows me on instagram knows this. So when I saw the lone green capsaicin jewel, and the sweet ripe pineapple I knew, muddling was in my immediate future. And no matter what it took I was going to sway my teammates to the sweet & spicy side of life. However, look very closely at the photos, there was no muddler…not one within 50 feet of the bar, so I channeled my inner Olivia Pope, and made do with the bottom of the butter knife, and muddled my way through the jalapeno pepper, and pineapple to a wonderfully spicy sweet viscous ingredient that we combined with a healthy pour of Captain Morgan Pineapple Rum and a splash of ginger ale for effervescence, then garnished with a slice of pineapple, jalapeno and a sprig of mint.

Kevin of the KVJ Show on WRMF, and Alex Marcano, South Florida Captain Morgan Ambassador were the two judges with each voting for opposing teams causing a cocktail tie, the nail-biting tension was broken by a random event attendee who went for One Love. Both teams ended up winners and got a meet & greet with SOJA after their performance on Saturday at SunFest.

Captain Morgan Cocktails served at SunFest were:

Captain Morgan Baewatch
Ingredients:
1.5 oz. Captain Morgan Pineapple Rum
1 oz. cranberry juice
1 oz. pineapple juice
1 slice pineapple
Instructions:
Fill tall glass with ice and pour in pineapple juice and Captain Morgan® Pineapple Rum. Top with cranberry juice and garnish with pineapple wedge.

Captain Morgan Shark Puncher
Ingredients:
9 oz Captain Morgan Coconut Rum
9 oz Orange Juice
3 oz Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice
6 oz Cranberry Juice
Instructions:
Combine all ingredients in a pitcher and stir.

Captain Morgan Palomaloha
Ingredients:
1.5 oz Captain Morgan Grapefruit Rum
Juice of ½ lime
Grapefruit soda to top
Instructions:
Fill tall glass with ice and pour in Captain Morgan® Grapefruit Rum, lime juice and grapefruit soda. Garnish with grapefruit wedge.
