With Valentine’s Day four short days away we’ve put together a list of four crowd pleasing sparkling Rosé wines representing the old world, starting with with affordable Italian Prosecco, and Spanish Cava, and finishing with a French Champagne splurge. With Rosé wine intrigue, especially on Valentine’s Day, these mass appeal wines are sure to make one blush with palate pleasure.
Starting with the least expensive, from Spain, we have Cavas Hill Rosado (SRP $13): Since 1887, Cavas Hill has been producing one of Catalonia’s most famous specialities using traditional methods in the town of Moja in the Alt Penedés region of Spain – elegant cava made from select Spanish grape varieties. This Cava blend is made from the distinctive grape varieties Grenache and Mouvèdre (Spanish: Garnacha, Monastrell) and is characterized by its fruity and harmonious taste.
Mionetto has been Italy’s foremost producer of Prosecco wines for more than 125 years. The winery was founded in 1887 by Francesco Mionetto in the small village of Valdobbiadene, located just north of Venice. Prosecco is an especially challenging wine to produce because of historical ownership laws in the region. Wineries traditionally do not own their vineyards or own very little and most Prosecco vineyards are small, ranging in size from only 1-4 hectares. It is the winemaker’s job then not only to produce a high quality sparkling wine, but to maintain the relationships with local farmers who provide the grapes. Mionetto is fortunate to have relationships with vineyard owners that date back for generations. Many of the farmers have been working with Mionetto for over 40 years. The strength and longevity of these relationships can affect the quality and quantity of grapes provided to a winery. These relationships have been passed from generation to generation within the Mionetto family.
Mionetto Prestige Gran Rosé (SRP $14): recently launched its sparkling rosé which is a blend of Raboso and Lagrein, lending its red fruit notes of pomegranate and black current. This fresh and fruity sparkling wine has a fine persistent perlage which has pleasing mass appeal.
Mionetto Luxury Cuvée Sergio Rosé (SRP $19): This extra dry sparkling rosé Prosecco has a zesty acidity with aromas of black currant, wild rose, and raspberry. This sparkling cuvee has a luminous pink hue, making it a crowd-pleasing hit for Valentine’s Day.
Alfred Gratien Classic Rosé (SRP $65): Champagnes from Alfred Gratien have a lengthy tradition and, disregarding the mass-produced ethos and fashions of modern times, still remain true to that tradition today. What you get is a “hand-crafted” champagne that represents quality and uniqueness. This Tête-du-cuvée is crafted by fourth generation cellar master, Nicolas Jaeger. This champagne is well-structured and balanced with fine persistent mousse. A refined blend, where the elegance of chardonnay and the fruity notes of Pinot Meunier mingle with delicacy.
