South Florida Beekeepers Association Seminar Series: Learn How To Be A Beekeeper

So you want to be a beekeeper? The South Florida Beekeepers Association is hosting a seminar series at The Urban Farming Institute located adjacent to Jaco Pastorius Park and at The Urban Beekeepers Warehouse also in Oakland Park beginning on August 19th. The seminar series dates, times and details are as follows:

  • August 19th – “I want to bee a Beekeeper Class 101″
  • August 26th -  SFBA Meeting;  “A Hive, is a Hive, is a Hive?”
  • September 16th – “Am I Ready to put Hives in my Backyard..YES!! Class 102″
  • September 23rd – -  SFBA Meeting;  “Special Guest Speaker Dr. Bill Kern, phd, uf”
  • October 28th – -  SFBA Meeting;  “Varroa Mites – Are Bees the only Bug in My Hives?”
  • November 13th – - -  SFBA Meeting;  “Special Guest Speaker Dr. Jamie Ellis, phd, uf”

August 19
When:     9:30 AM – 3:30 PM  WORKSHOP/CLASS 101
(Class 102 – Sep 16th)

Where:    The Urban Beekeeper’s Warehouse

I want to bee a Beekeeper Class 
Part 1 of 2 Introduction to Beekeeping Class. You will leave with the support and knowledge to purchase the correct equipment and take the next step to putting bees in your own hive. This is your start to having hives in your backyard. You will learn rules and regulations. What kind of equipment you need. Why your  beekeeping philosophy is important? Basics of Honeybee biology and an understanding of your colony as a super organism. We will have coffee, snacks and serve lunch. At the end of this class you will have the basics of beekeeping biology, philosophy to know what type of hives and equipment you will want to purchase and prepare you for part II of this program, which will have you putting bees in your own hives.

Where:   The Urban Farming Institute at Jaco Pastorius Park

A Hive, is a Hive, is a Hive?
A Good look at your Honeybee Hive Options.  Different hives, different configurations of Langstroth Hives, Deeps, Mediums, Shallows. A review if Bottom Boards, Covers and accessories.
We will look at Top-Bar Hives, and do  “I buy a hive or can I build my own”.

Where:    The Urban Beekeeper’s Warehouse
Am I Ready to put Hives in my Backyard..YES!! 
Part 2 “I am a BEEKEEPER”
This is a continuation of your knowledge of the bee colony. It will expand your understanding of what is happening inside the hive and the bees. Bee/Hive, Pest/Disease management. My options and my bee philosophy. We will take you inside a hive for a complete inspection, and lead you on your way to setting up your own hives

Special Guest Speaker Dr. Bill Kern, phd, uf 
Dr. Kern will share his vast knowledge of Honeybees. Discuss local flora and what your bees are eating. We will also get his insight into AHB (African Hybrid Bees)

Varroa Mites
Are Bees the only Bug in My Hives?

“I just lost my strongest Hive! What happened!” Varroa mites are most likely the primary cause of hive loss with beekeepers. Most backyard beekeepers have lost hives to Varroa. We will review this pest’s biology and hive management options to control them

Special Guest Speaker Dr. Jamie Ellis, phd, uf 
Dr. Jamie Ellis is a renowned professor of Etymology, specializing in Honeybees. He is known worldwide and has visited and educated beekeepers on every continent except Antarctica. His presentations bring the most demanding honeybee subjects to his audience in an entertaining and understandable format.
